What the Cards Are Saying book cover

What the Cards Are Saying: Learning the Art and Business of Card Reading. Kindle Edition, 2020.

When I was 15, a spiritual mentor taught me the art of card reading, using a regular playing deck and the "Royal Method" of interpretation. The experience opened my intuitive gateways and helped to shape my life path. Now I would like to teach you this simple yet remarkably powerful method so that you can obtain on-target guidance for yourself and others, even if you've never thought you were psychic. The soul needs times and places to touch the Mysteries, to commune with sources of guidance beyond the ordinary, to feel our unity with a Consciousness greater than our own. Practitioners like yourself can open the gates to these experiences. I hope you feel proud to carry on our ancient lineage!

When Oracles Speak book cover

When Oracles Speak: Understanding the Signs and Symbols All Around Us. (Theosophical Publishing House, Quest Books, 2000)

This reprint of Listening to the Oracle includes new material on the expanded perspectives of Theosophy and how they open a view of reality in which oracles can speak to us. It is richly laden with exercises and practices that promote "oracular consciousness"—the state of mind in which we can see the deeper meaning behind signs, dreams, and sudden intuitions. As the reviewer, Michael W. Fox. said, "This was is a providential book in these chaotic and troubling times, giving comfort and security to many and guidance toward spiritual affirmation and rediscovery of the gifts of life that are transformative of us as individuals and as a species."

Listening to the Oracle book cover

Listening to the Oracle: The Ancient Art of Finding Guidance in the Signs and Symbols All Around Us. (Harper, San Francisco 1997)

Since ancient times, people have found inspired guidance through signs, dreams, encounters with animals, and the arts of divination. They regarded these communications as oracles—messages of guidance from transcendent sources beyond the personal self. The oracles haven't stopped speaking to us today. We've just forgotten how to listen. Dr. Skafte's research of oracular practices from numerous cultures and historical periods inspires us to hear and see the "divine messages" that flow into our own lives.

Depth Psychology: Meditations in the Field book cover

Creativity as an archetypal calling. In Depth Psychology: Meditations in the Field. (D. Slattery and L. Corbett, eds.) Daimon Verlag, Einsiedeln, Switzerland, 2002 pp. 33-44.

The mythological Muse came into my life during a period of drought. My internal springs of creativity had dried up to such a degree that I despaired of ever again producing anything. One day, I was hiding out in the lower levels of the University library when I casually reached for a book on the shelf. It was a collection of ancient Greek poetry. Opening the volume at random, my eyes fell upon a verse by Mesomedes of Crete. "Sing to me, Beloved Muse, and I will answer with my song / Breathe your breath upon the groves, and all my soul will tremble." I thrill passed through me. I seemed to make direct contact with a Presence that the poet himself called upon. In a mysterious way, she had "breathed her breath" of inspiration upon my own arid inner groves. I knew then that my creativity would flourish again.

About Dr. Skafte

I have devoted my life to exploring the wondrous ways we can receive guidance, illumination, and healing from transcendent sources beyond the personal self. Bridging the insights of depth psychology with ancient wisdom traditions, my work affirms the psyche's power to open expanded dimensions of our own being.

I hold a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Colorado and practiced for many years as a psychotherapist before discovering that my true love was teaching. For almost a decade, I chaired the Depth Psychology program at Pacifica Graduate Institute (Santa Barbara, CA), also serving as Academic Dean of that institution for a time. I have lectured widely in the United States and England, focusing on the states of consciousness that allow us to be spoken to meaningfully by signs, dreams, and oracles. My book on this subject, Listening to the Oracle (Harper, San Francisco, 1997), has been translated into three languages.

At the age of 15, I was taught to read cards by a metaphysical mentor—an experience that opened my psychic gateways and set the direction of my spiritual life. I continued to develop this art during the next decades, performing well over 10,000 card divinations. With each passing year, my awe only deepens when I witness the miracles that unfold when sacred oracles speak to the heart. My book, What the Cards Are Saying (2020), aims to teach others the unique methods I use, because they are known by only a few practitioners.

It gives me pleasure to be writing a memoir about my spiritual awakening as a teenager and the metaphysical adventures that awaited me down the road. The work, entitled Transcendent Embrace, will be released in three parts during the next several months. Links will be provided on this website.

The soul needs to touch the Mysteries, to commune with sources of guidance beyond the ordinary, to feel unity with a Consciousness greater than our own. If my work offers a place in the world where these precious experiences can draw greater breath, I will feel well contented.
